Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 6 Review: Elliott's Pond

Defining what makes a family is the theme of the touching Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 6.

The obvious family ties are in the case of the week, which concerns two abductions in a small Delaware town. The first was in 1983, when the Henson twins disappeared while cutting through a cornfield. This loss of family deeply affects older brother Deeley, who many blamed for the disappearance and who became the town drunk.

30 Years Ago - Criminal Minds

Thirty years after the first disappearance, three teen boys vanish while retracing the Henson twins' last steps, and the BAU must determine the connection between the two events.

It was a solid twist when the team solved the mystery of how the Henson twins, who grew to adulthood while captives, actually abducted the three boys, protecting them according to their own warped logic.

And it was reaffirming to not only see the three boys reunited with their parents, but also to see Deeley, who blamed himself for three decades, get to hug again the siblings that he thought he had lost. All in all, a fairly upbeat episode, with no real, living villain, just a lot of victims.

But this was also about the BAU as family, and how they had to say goodbye to one of their own, Hotch.

Considering how often Hotch had been in the cross-hairs of the nut-jobs the BAU pursues, it was smart of the producers to have he and Jack enter witness protection to escape the stalking of Mr. Scratch. This also neatly brings up the fugitive serial killers that they've done little to corral this season.

The bulk of the episode was the team members reacting to Hotch's decision.

J.J.: That's a lot to process before my first cup. I can't believe he's been dealing with this for weeks and we never knew.
Reid: That part actually doesn't surprise me. He's always kept things to himself. It's just his way of protecting us.

Directing the episode, Matthew Gray Gubler created just the right touch of melancholy and remembrance, so that it was less "Goodbye" and more "Have a good life."

I applaud the choice of Prentiss as the new unit chief, as she was willing to leave London, Interpol, and, let's face it, her boyfriend behind to return home.

Prentiss: I love being here and I've really missed you guys.
J.J.: We have missed you too.
Reid: Honestly, you have no idea how much.

It was the right move to pass over Rossi for chief. He's really like the fun uncle of the BAU. Still he stood tall this episode, first comforting Garcia, who hates change. (Alvez can certainly attest to that this season.)

You'll adapt, we all will. Trust me, kiddo. I've been here before.

Rossi [to Garcia]

He was also the perfect choice to hammer home the message that the BAU is a family.

It's what happens when we're not on a case that defines who we are. We stand beside one another, through good, through bad, because we're family.

Rossi

The producers and writers made the best of a bad situation in this farewell to Hotch, who has lost so much through the years. He did what he had to do to project Jack. And frankly, his mental health likely will be better off in the long run without the daily exposure to psychos which he had while at the BAU.

Best of all, they left Hotch alive, so that the possibility exists for a return visit from Thomas Gibson after the wounds heal, probably when the show winds down in the not-too-distant future. In the grim world the BAU inhabits, that's a win.

So now the team ventures forward, with an old friend as the new boss and a new team member easing his way into a long-term family. It's been a bit of a bumpy transition, but, all things considered, the BAU has come out solidified on the other side.

Now it's time to go round up those fugitive serial killers, especially Mr. Scratch. They've got added incentive to bring in Peter Lewis now, since he's the one who caused Hotch's departure.

To view the new team in action, watch Criminal Minds online.

Considering the circumstances, was this a fitting send-off for Hotch? Will Prentiss be a worthy successor as unit chief? Did this transition feel organic to you? Comment below.

Where did three children disappear to?

That was a key question on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 6 when the three children disappeared on the same path, leading the time to think they were all taken at the same time.

When the team kicked off the investigation, they realized the case was actually linked to one from 30 years ago, but what issues did they come up against in their quest for answers?

What will CBS renew?

The Odd Couple showed some promise last season, but all of that has been pretty much squandered. It won't be back.

2 Broke Girls is slipping, but CBS might still keep it around if it makes them enough money. Kevin Can Wait is still safe, but any more slippage and its fate becomes murky.

Man With a Plan and The Great Indoors had their orders extended to 19 episodes each. If they can stay stable, they have a shot at sticking around, but I don't like their odds of retaining their ratings.

Pure Genius won't make the cut for any more episodes. It's performing terribly.

Code Black had a shorter order last year, but this season could be it for the medical drama barring a miracle.

Something tells me Elementary got the order for two more episodes to close the series out.

It's worth noting, when considering these figures, that CBS is currently averaging a 1.49 rating among adults 18-49 with original programming.

If you want to see how the other networks are stacking up, we have separate posts for The CW, ABC, Fox and NBC.

Note: Training Day, Doubt, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss are on tap for mid-season.

1. The Big Bang Theory - Likely Renewal

The big bang theory likely renewal
Season 10 is down just 5 percent, averaging 14.5 million viewers and a 3.5 rating. The only thing that will come between a renewal is if the stars want out. If the stars do want out, the spin-off could easily replace it.

2. Kevin Can Wait - Likely Renewal

Kevin can wait could go either way
Kevin Can Wait managed to stabilize after losing The Big Bang Theory as a lead in.. Season 1 is averaging 8.6 million viewers and a 2.0 rating. There are some issues behind the scenes, but CBS will find a way to keep the show around.

3. NCIS - Certain Renewal

Ncis certain renewal
NCIS is down just over 10 percent, averaging 14.9 million and a 1.9 rating. It will be back for many more seasons.

4. The Great Indoors - Could Go Either Way

The great indoors could go either way
The Great Indoors premiered with 8.2 million viewers and a 1.7 rating. It lost almost half of The Big Bang Theory lead-in. We'll need to wait for some more data.

5. Bull - Certain Renewal

Bull certain renewal
Bull has been one of few freshman hits. Season 1 is averaging 13 million viewers and a 1.7 rating. It gets a sizeable increase in delayed viewing and CBS will want to keep Michael Weatherly around.

6. Criminal Minds - Certain Renewal

Criminal minds certain renewal
Ratings are down almost 10 percent to 7.9 million and a 1.6 rating. The show gets a huge boost in delayed viewing. It will be back.

CBS Midseason Schedule: When Will Training Day, Ransom & Doubt Premiere?

CBS has finally announced its midseason schedule.

Yes, we know, they're a bit late to the party, but at least we finally have some solid information about when the new shows will hit the air.

The most shocking thing about the schedule is that Ransom will move to Saturdays after just one episode. Why? Because CBS is hoping to capitalize on the lack of ratings on Saturday nights with a relatively low-cost acquisition. The show looks good, too!

Doubt 1x01

Highly anticipated series, Training Day, will cap off Thursday nights on CBS when Pure Genius ends its run.

Doubt will step in on Wednesday nights when Code Black concludes for its season or series.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Superior Donuts will be scheduled at a later date.

Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 7 Review: Mirror Image

Finally, the spotlight shines on Dr. Tara Lewis, the criminally underused member of the BAU.

Not only do we get to learn more about Lewis on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 7, but the season's on-and-off storyline about the escaped serial killers is on again, with Mr. Scratch front and center.

Dr. Tara Lewis' Brother - Criminal Minds

And his whole plan hinges on some long-simmering family drama.

The episode starts innocently enough, with Lewis, who's been missing for a few episodes already this season, asking for the day off.

But then Garcia whips out her inner profiler for Prentiss, explaining that Lewis's deep, dark secret is that she's estranged from her younger, equally brilliant brother Gabriel, who has thrown his life away on get-rich-quick schemes.

And Lewis admits that Gabriel, who seemingly wasted the chance for a full ride to Yale, has disappointed her.

When it comes to my brother, hostility and dismissal are my specialty.

Lewis

Soon the rest of the team drifts in, commenting on Gabriel and his history, which baffles Garcia. It's great to see her reaction when Reid explains what's going on.

Reid [to Garcia]: It was an experiment. She wanted to time how long you could keep a private conservation private, and you made it 12 hours.
Alvez: Damn. I had you down for six.
Garcia: You know what? I thought you were my friends, but you suck. You all suck, especially new guy, but then you always suck.
Reid: I had 14 hours. I think I win, right?
J.J.: Who had 11?
Prentiss: I did.

It seemed that Garcia was getting past dumping on Alvez, but apparently not. Penelope, you need to get over the loss of your Hot Stuff. It's not Alvez's fault that he's attractive and ethnic as well. Did the new guy have to be a chunky Pole to gain your approval?

Anyway, there's nothing like having a total stranger impersonating your brother to ruin a possible reconciliation.

Now Lewis, who seemed lukewarm on the idea to start with, has to figure out this imposter's deal, and soon has to locate her missing brother as well, along with consoling her father, whose expressions seem to suggest, "You deal with these nutjobs every week?"

It makes perfect sense that Mr. Scratch is behind all this. After all, this is the second time this season that he's used a brainwashed pawn to screw with the BAU (See Criminal Minds Season 12, Episode 1). Let's not forget that he's always responsible for the disappearance of Hotch (right!!!)

We find out that Lewis is actually the go-getter that she appears to be, although I'm still fuzzy why anybody would academically immerse herself in the world of serial killers. Locking them up is a whole 'nother ballgame.

But we also discover that Gabriel had a fairly sound reason for squandering his potential, one that Lewis and Albert seem to come to terms with.

Albert: But the two of you were just so different. You, I never had to worry about you. But your brother, he needed something different, something that I just couldn't give him.
Lewis: Daddy, you did your best. Now it's my turn.

Mr. Scratch is already having his desired effect of wearing down the BAU. But at least Prentiss passed her first real test of leadership.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting tired of losing to this rat-faced son of a bitch. He's not going to take anyone else away from us, not on my watch. Am I clear?

Prentiss

Like any good bureaucrat, Prentiss has shown a knack for finding funding for a new position. Special Agent Stephen Walker will be transferring in from the Behaviorial Analysis Program, the counterintelligence division of the FBI, starting on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 8. Hopefully Garcia won't target him as well.

Unfortunately Mr. Scratch escaped again. So periodically for the rest of the season, he'll have his mind-altered surrogates plaguing the BAU. Also, by my count, there's still four other serial killers they have yet to recover, so that should be good for four episodes as well.

To catch up on the evolution of the BAU this season, both organic and forced, watch Criminal Minds online.

Are you done with Mr. Scratch? Are you excited about another new agent? Do you feel you know Lewis better after this episode? Comment below.

Was Dr. Tara Lewis' brother the real deal?

That was addressed on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 7 when a man appeared in town, claiming he was the brother of Dr. Tara Lewis.

The team investigated whether the man could really be the brother in question, or if he was trying to fool them for something more sinister.

Tara struggled to get in contact with the real sibling, fueling her speculation that something was not right.

This week on Criminal Minds, the BAU team heads to Yakima, Washington after the remains of a dozen people are found along a creek bed.

Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 8 is titled "Scarecrow" and in this exclusive clip, the team discusses the similarities of the victims uncovered to other known cases and hone in on a particular body.

With another girl missing, it's time for the BAU to get to work. They need to save Cherry Jones.

This is also another pivotal hour for the team because Alvez might not have to suffer at the hands of Garcia for much longer.

Suffer how, you ask? As "Newbie"!

That's right. There's another new character joining the cast and this one comes in the form on Damon Gupton.

He'll play Stephen Walker, a seasoned profiler from the Behavioral Analysis Program of the FBI.

Will Walker be someone Prentiss has worked with before and trusts from her work while she's been away from BAU? Will he be able to help the team catch Mr. Scratch?

Check out this exclusive sneak peak and tune in Wednesday, 9/8c on CBS for the fall finale of Criminal Minds to find out!

If you've missed any of the action, or Garcia's painful needling of Alvez, you can watch Criminal Minds online to catch up.

The changes, they keep a-coming at the BAU.

One is in and another is temporarily out in the end, but first, there's a bizarre serial killer (if that's not redundant) to find on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 8.

On a Trip! - Criminal Minds

I liked that the unsub was a man who had been psychologically warped by his religious zealot of a father, to the point that he's walking around his barn dressed like a scarecrow.

Talk about your radical Christianity! Look at all the victims that eventually resulted from one man's fanaticism.

And his neighbors are clueless. That nice young fella down the road, when he's not wrapping up dead prostitutes in burlap and barbed wire, never a good look.

It was effective how the desperate sex worker/young mom tapped into the unsub's daddy issues to eventually gain his sympathy and get herself set free.

Stabbing him in the back and running blindly through the cornfield wasn't the greatest strategy, but again ... desperate.

The rural farm was a great setting for the climax.

The would-be victim running through the cornfield, to be brought up short by the skeleton/scarecrow, was impactful. And you can't beat death by drowning in a silo as a fitting end for a confused but homicidal farmboy.

Sadly, the introduction of new agent Stephen Walker had a lot of buildup for very little payoff, at least in this episode.

Prentiss has been hinting for two episodes that there's a new agent coming. This leaves the other BAU agents profiling the possible hire. Garcia's idea was rightfully universally panned.

So whoever this well-qualified, mystery person is, once they join, we change our name from the Magnificent Seven to the Awesome Eight. Huh? It's perfect.

Garcia

It's funny how Alvez is looking forward to a new agent so that he would lose his unwanted nickname. Guess again.

Alvez: Personally, I'll be happy not to be the new guy anymore. Whoever comes in can get that title and Garcia can stop calling me 'newbie.'
JJ: She is a creature of habit. I think you're stuck with that one, newbie.

It seems like Prentiss has made a great choice, a 20-year veteran from the Behavioral Analysis Program, the FBI's counter-intelligence unit. Rossi greets him like a long-lost brother, so he must have a good reputation. And he seems genuinely glad to be there.

Agent Prentiss knows this, but I have followed and admired the work of the BAU for years. So when Emily called and asked me to join the team, the answer was easy.

Walker

It should be interesting to see how the two new agents play off each other, Walker the FBI insider versus Alvez, the military man/tracker.

It's a different feel in the post-Hotch era, but not necessarily a bad one. The family just needs to take in its new members, which will require time.

Unfortunately, as Walker arrives, Reid departs, at least for a while.

Matthew Gray Gubler does a wonderful job portraying the frustrated Reid, who can't solve his mother's Alzheimer's. It's tough being the smartest man in the room yet still not having any answers,.

Prentiss: I have one condition. I need you to check in every day, no matter what. I need to know you're OK.
Reid: That's understood. ... I don't know how to fix this.

Prentiss' pronouncement is pretty ominous. It almost hints at a Mr. Scratch-Reid encounter in Houston.

It would be great to have Jane Lynch back for an episode or two. After all, she certainly has the time after her aptly named Angel From Hell went down in flames.

And now comes the holiday break So let's do a checklist after the first third of the season:

  • Replacement for Hotch: Prentiss, check;
  • Replacement for Morgan: Alvez, check.
  • Meaningful roles for everyone: Not so much. Just introducing Alves and re-introducing Prentiss has shoved JJ, Reid, Lewis and Rossi largely to the background. Now there's Walker to introduce as well. Good thing it's a team show, because on a team, not everyone can start.
  • Rounding up the 13 serial killers that broke out last season: Incomplete. Supposedly nine have been recaptured, leaving four still at large, including the worst of them. Mr. Scratch.
  • Boss above unit chief: I've lost track of who Prentiss' boss is. Or do it even matter if they have one? The previous bosses have largely faded into the woodwork, so why bother?
  • New guy for Garcia: Fail. Garcia is at her best when she's in a relationship, so let's give her one again.

Stiles and Lydia from Teen Wolf deserve love TOGETHER. It's the final season, let them find their way to each other already!

2. Cisco Ramon - The Flash

Cisco ramon the flash
Cisco has always fallen for someone, but never truly gets the girl. The Flash hasn't been known for its love, and we need someone to help pull Cisco back out of the darkness that has surrounded him this season. He's such a giving soul and so sweet. He deserves a crush that he eventually reciprocates. It would be so fun to watch!

3. The Leighton Brothers - Code Black

The leighton brothers code black
Angus and Mike Leighton from Code Black. Poor Angus just wants to do his job and do it well. Then you throw his brother out of an airplane. And then Mike actually leaves (because Tommy Dewey has a billion jobs, but still). You just want to hug these guys. Repeatedly.

4. Mick Rory - Legends of Tomorrow

Mick rory legends of tomorrow
Mick Rory from Legends of Tomorrow. I'm still bitter about the loss of Leonard Snart, but I still have my Micky. Unfortunately the rest of the Legends crew don't seem to value and love the guy like I do. Mick has had a tough go of it. He lost the closest person he had and the only one who seemed to give a damn about him. And he's stuck on a time ship with a merry band of misfits who tend to treat him like he's an idiot. He has understandably been in a funk. Even a thieving, occasionally homicidal, pyromaniac needs love! At least a badass vixen has taken a shining to him.

5. Spencer Reid - Criminal Minds

Spencer reid criminal minds
Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds has never had a real relationship. His one real love interest died before they ever had a chance to be together, and it was incredibly sad. He's had so much bad luck throughout the series, and his mom is taking a turn for the worse. If anyone is deserving of some happiness, it's him.

6. Jim Gordon - Gotham

Jim gordon gotham
"Gotham’s Jim Gordon is a complete mess, but the guy deserves a break in the love department. When he connected with Valerie Vale at the beginning of Season 3, it seemed like his luck had changed, but his pining for Lee ruined that relationship before it even had a chance. He and Lee are pretty much dead in the water, so can’t we give him someone else to love? At this point, he deserves a little bit of happiness.

Of the many shocking TV deaths this year, Poussey from Orange is the New Black was definitely one of the most upsetting. Poussey was a favorite character on the show, and she'll be sorely missed. RIP.

2. Jessica Pearson - Suits

Jessica Pearson on Suits. We all had an idea this was coming when Gina Torres started pursuing other options, but it still hurt when it happened. And it's time to say thanks to Gina for giving us five and a half seasons of awesome leadership of Pearson Specter...whatever the hell it's called anymore.

3. Cat Grant - Supergirl

Cat grant supergirl
Cat Grant on Supergirl. Everything about the move to the CW worked in the show's favor except for losing Calista Flockhart as a series regular. She brought so much depth and humor to the character, and we definitely miss seeing her every week.

4. Tony DiNozzo - NCIS

Tony dinozzo ncis
I don't think fans of NCIS will ever really get over the loss of Michael Weatherly's Tony DiNozzo from the flagship series. Even though his new series, Bull, is squished between two NCIS hours on Tuesday, it's just not the same.

5. Glenn Rhee - The Walking Dead

Glenn rhee the walking dead
Glenn was lost in a most heinous way on The Walking Dead, as retribution for Daryl's attempt to stand up against Negan after he killed Abraham. While both deaths were pointless, Glenn was with the group from the beginning and just starting a family. His desperate attempt to communicate with Maggie as he passed reminded us of his heroism and how much he would be missed, only moments later.

6. Aaron Hotchner - Criminal Minds

Look, Thomas Gibson deserved to be fired, but that doesn't mean we're not allowed to miss his character. We watched Hotch lead the BAU for 12 years, and then he was gone without so much as a goodbye. The situation couldn't be helped, but it still sucked.

Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9 Review: Profiling 202

David Rossi, profiling god.

That's the central theme of Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9

The Birthday Call - Criminal Minds

Oh yeah, the BAU also makes some progress on the escaped serial-killer front.

The occasion this episode is the FBI's brightest young minds coming together to learn from the agency elder.

Or, to put it another way, "The Art of Psychological War" by David Rossi.

It was fun to see scenarios suggested by the seminar participants being acted out by the BAU members, at least in animation, as Rossi gruffly corrects them.

It's understandable that Rossi is tense.

Rossi gives a lesson - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9

First, it's his birthday, and he's not getting any younger. Second, every year serial killer Tommy Yates gives him a present: the name and location of one of his many kills.

To further complicate things, Yates is one of the few escaped serial killers still on the loose. So to taunt Rossi further, he's feeding him the location of fresh, not long dead, victims, while shaking up his M.O. erratically.

It makes sense that Rossi has seen an advantage to developing a rapport with Yates, in order to gain info from him that gives families closure.

Still Yates is way off base insinuating that he and Rossi are similar creatures. More like monster and monster hunter.

But Rossi makes a good point that coloring these killers as monsters gives them too much power.

I used to think they were all monsters too. But they're not. They're just men, and occasionally women. Not to respect the people I hunt would be like a soldier not respecting his enemy, and that mistake costs lives.

Rossi

Rossi's pursuit of Yates deftly ties into how the profilers have to get inside the minds of these killers.

Every investigation at this point requires patience and, most of all, focus. All the answers aren't all out there, Most are right here [pointing to his head], and that's the job. That's why we get into the mind of the killer.

Rossi

Rossi does the right thing by making sure these young profilers know what they're getting into, and how it can affect them. It's heartening to see one drop out before he goes too far down the rabbit hole in the hope of having a more normal life.

This episode does an excellent job of delving into who David Rossi is. He's been a mainstay of the BAU since Jason Gideon's early flameout.

Now granted, this had a kind of a sad "This is Your Life" vibe. Great at his career, and apparently in the kitchen. But he's got a family he rarely sees and no special woman in his life (I think he's still off with his ex, based on his comment in this episode).

But it's obvious that his co-workers appreciate him.

Listen to Prentiss:

Prentiss: You keep burning the candle at both ends, there won't be much of you left.
Rossi: Wait a minute, I say that. What are you doing, using my sayings against me?
Prentiss: I am. It's true. That's why it's a good saying. Go get some rest. No case was solved in a day.
Rossi: That's another one.
Prentiss: I know. What do you want? I learned from the best.

Then there's newbie Steven Walker

We save lives, and that's what matters. And every life we save is a win. You taught me that.

Walker [to Rossi]
New agent Stephen Walker - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9

Speaking of Walker, good first time out of the blocks, offering solid support to Rossi both at the seminar and behind closed doors.

What's his special skill? Who knows? Hopefully, he'll get the spotlight treatment sooner rather than later.

Some of these spotlight episodes work better than others. I like tonight's and the one about J.J., Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 2. The one about Lewis, Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 7, not so much.

Unfortunately, this type of episode means everyone else gets shoved to the background. So we had little of Lewis, J.J. and Alves, and precious little of Garcia, who is usually the only comic relief to be had.

Admittedly, an episode featuring an escaped serial killer wandering about mutilating women has little call for comic relief. Instead it was a bad case of the grims.

Once it was clear that Yates was a wounded animal, you knew that Rossi would soon figure out his plot and run him to ground. But seriously, Rossi was on display here, not the wheezing Yates, so that's to be expected.

OK. for those keeping score at home, we're down to three escaped serial killers. Mr. Scratch is the prominent one. Damned if I know who the other two are, but I'm sure they'll be featured down the line on Criminal Minds Season 12. Or maybe they can just die from bad sushi, so we can get fresh serial killers.

Those who want to attempt to catch up on the escaped serial-killer storyline can watch Criminal Minds online.

How did you like this glimpse into Rossi? Are you intrigued by Walker? Who deserves the spotlight treatment next? Comment below.

Why was Tommy Yates calling Rossi?

That was a key question on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9 when it became clear that the serial killer had a new trick up his sleeve and it paved the for Rossi to make a grisly discovery.

The team decided they needed to do something about Tommy Yates because the victims were piling up and they were no closer to the truth.

There are a lot of characters without whom Criminal Minds can survive.

You can argue with me if you want, but I'm of the opinion that the one whose departure would make the greatest impact would be one Penelope Garcia.

On Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10, the BAU team travels to San Diego to investigate some home invasions that turn deadly.

And when they're on the road, the team relies on Garcia's nimble fingers and puzzle solving mind to string together the pieces of evidence to track their suspects.

This time, she's looking into someone named Michael Sale.

Sales is the middle child of three boys

His father died at age sixteen and his mother drank himself to death soon afterward.

Garcia immediately feels the heartstrings pulling, and her face falls.

"Those boys raised themselves," she says. "Aw. That's so sad. So, of course, they each got in their own kind of trouble."

As she begins chatting about their records and lamenting the reasons they may have gotten there, Prentiss has other news for her.

She needs to research a green van. As she lists the states to which this van may be connected, Garcia realizes this is going to take a lot of time.

Maybe she can have the make and model, too.

Um, no, but Alvez chimes in, "Wishful thinking." After all, the van is about 40 years old.

Garcia's in for a long night...unless she's her usual, awesome self, and she'll have them the information they need in no time.

Be sure to tune into Criminal Minds on CBS tonight at 9/8c and be here for a full review after it airs!

What makes a family?

That's the theme of Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10.

Home Invasions - Criminal Minds

This isn't the first time this season that this topic has been tackled.

In fact, Rossi offered a whole toast about it on Criminal Minds Season 10 Episode 6. Then there was Lewis' messed-up family on Criminal Minds Season 10 Episode 7.

It's almost like the producers are trying to hammer home a message: "Yeah, Hotch and Morgan are gone. But these guys will grow on you if you give them a chance."

Trading ideas - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10

Let's come back to that, and focus instead on a family that didn't work: The drug-driven misfits in the case of the week.

The quintet that came together from bad circumstances and became a family unit would be admirable, if not, you know, for the fact that they're trashing homes and robbing and killing people. That's just frowned upon and is bound to attract the wrong kind of attention.

That's the problem with group dynamics. Different personalities, different agendas.

Prentiss

It was a sound setup, with the fresh-faced females casing the home and setting up the break-ins. It was interesting how the others filled in the roles outlined by the BAU as parts of a typical gang.

Too bad they were being led by a whack-job. But then it wouldn't be Criminal Minds if this were just an organized heist crew.

Reversing direction partway through was an interesting twist, making the drugged-up girlfriend actually the brains of the operation. No wonder things fell apart as quickly as they did, with Bea dealing with her abandonment issues.

It seems our gang is becoming unglued faster than we predicted.

Rossi

Sometimes you feel somewhat sorry for the unsubs and can kinda understand their twisted logic. But it's hard to relate to a spoiled little rich girl whose parents have cleaned up her messes all of her life.

The good thing about having a group of unsubs is it takes a little longer for the BAU to unravel who's who.

Gotta love Garcia, tying a dead guy to a green van from somewhere in the southern United States. I must have her Google tips.

Germ's dead body led to Zeke, who didn't have the right stuff to be the alpha. So that leads to a female with ties to the area and class, and before long, they're racing off to Bea's house.

Granted, it was long after two of the four remaining unsubs had been shot. Cue cackling Bea being led off to an asylum.

Unsub Theories - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10

Now let's go back to the new additions over the past couple of seasons.

Let's define their roles. Alvez is supposed to be the new Morgan: the hunky action guy with a sly sense of humor. And, I'm sorry to tell the Shemar Moore fans, Adam Rodriguez has done perfectly fine in that role. There's even a little sparring with Garcia. Remember, Moore choose to leave, whatever his reasons.

Prentiss is to be the new Hotch. She's trying, although she's not the totem pole that Hotch was. She has a different leadership style: more touchy-feely, more approachable. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Prentiss: You did great in San Diego. I'm glad you trusted your gut.
Walker: Thank you for listening. I've been on teams where opinions, especially new ones, aren't always valued.
Prentiss: That's the nice thing about this group. Everybody has a voice.

A bad thing was the show's acrimonious parting with Thomas Gibson, but for whatever behind-the-scenes reason, it happened. Move on.

Fitting In - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10

It's far too early to tell about Stephen Walker, who's something of a wild card. He's the new guy and knows it, and is working his way in slowly. But he seemed to have a ton of agency cred, so let's see what he can do before saying "I don't like him. He's not Morgan. He's not Hotch."

I'm more concerned that he's supposed to be the brainy guy, with Reid still MIA with his mother in Houston. Hopefully, that storyline gets picked up again soon, because the BAU needs Reid's quirkiness. Garcia can't be the only offbeat character.

Last, there's Lewis, missing again this week. I've tried. I like Aisha Tyler. But very little of her personality shines through Lewis. Time to try again. Maybe an Asian female to round out the diversity.

To sample all these characters, watch Criminal Minds online.

Mr. Scratch was mentioned in passing near the end of the hour, so here's hoping he pops up again soon.

What's your assessment of the revamped BAU? Who should stay and who should go (bringing back past favorites isn't an option)? Did the case of the week register much with you? Comment below.

Did the team manage to find another sick killer?

That was their plan on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 10 when they investigated a series of deadly home invasions in San Diego that appeared to be linked to someone who was seemingly innocent.

Upon investigating, the team realized there was someone else who was involved and that they could be looking at a network of people doing the killings.

On Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 11, Beth Simms' murder doesn't fit the pattern the BAU was expecting.

They've been tasked with looking into a bizarre case involving a clue uncovered on a series of bodies when an anatomy class teacher noticed something strange - a tiny ink drawing.

But this wasn't any teacher in the class. Also the county coroner, another ten-year-old case instantly came to mind and when the facts didn't add up, she knew she needed help.

Walker points out how the drawings change, almost seeming to grow as the bodies multiply.

What does it mean? Is it a message? If it's a killer's signature, changing it seems unlikely.

More importantly, why doesn't Beth have it?

Beth, who weathered tough times in the past, had cleaned up her act, but that didn't mean she fit into the group of seemingly Citizens of the Year who were also killed by this mysterious unsub.

Prentiss, Walker and Rossi, though, make relatively quick work of narrowing down the information, and with a call to Garcia, the pieces start to fit together.

It's off to Florida for our trusty team, and we have little doubt they'll go even further to solve the crime.

Click on the video below to get an idea of how the team works it out.

Elsewhere on the People's Choice Winner for Favorite TV Crime Drama, Jane Lynch returns as Spencer's mom, Diana.

Spencer decides to take her out of the clinical study early and bring her home with him. Will that be the right thing to do?

What plays out looks so far to give Norman and Norma Bates a run for the money.

Make sure you're here tonight for a full review of the episode after it airs on CBS at 9/8c.

Reid's back, facing a whole new challenge.

One that his big brain isn't going to be enough for.

His mother came to stay with him on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 11.

Reid's Mother Comes Home - Criminal Minds

Diana Reid, battling with schizophrenia and Alzheimer's, seemed like she's going to be too much for the BAU's most cerebral agent.

An experienced profiler such as Reid is used to getting into an unsub's mind.

That's a whole lot harder to do when it's someone you love.

What an un-Reid-like thing to do: Pulling his mother out of a clinical trial in Houston and bringing her back to live with him in D.C., without any real semblance of a plan.

All he seemed to have done was to pack up her meds and flee east.

But he's back to being the little boy, obeying his mother's voice.

We can only trust each other, nobody else. Just you and me.

Diana [to Reid]

With this tour-de-force performance as Diana, Jane Lynch once again proved that she's more than a gifted comedic talent.

She's paranoid one moment, raging the next, then reminiscing, then forgetting who Spencer wass. She really showcased the ravages of the conditions on Diana's mind.

It was especially heartbreaking during her coherent moments, when she and Reid flipped through her scrapbook, and she shared her intimate memories of him.

A New Home - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 11

Poor Reid just took it, his sadness and confusion showing on his face.

And somewhere in the back of his mind, he's got to know that both of his mother's conditions are hereditary, and he may lose his prized intellect down the road.

All his teammates were pulling for him. But they had nagging voices in their heads, as well.

Ironic, isn't it? Eventually we became parents to our parents.

Rossi [to JJ]

It looks like Reid will at least be getting some professional help, in the form of caseworker Cassie Campbell.

That's good, because he's definitely in over his head, as most people would be in such a situation.

It's commendable that Criminal Minds is going to such an effort to tackle a truly difficult subject.

Week after week, and season after season of showing the results of a deviant mind, they're exploring what happens when a healthy mind breaks down through the introduction of disease.

But it will be interesting to see how it unspools, as Lynch is scheduled to appear on Criminal Minds Season 12 Episodes 13 and 20 as well.

With JJ already mentioning her "bad feeling," I can't imagine there's a happy ending for Reid and his mother.

There's no way to neatly tie up with a bow the ravages of schizophrenia compounded by Alzheimer's.

I just hope this doesn't lead to Reid's departure, as well. There's been little enough of him in recent seasons.

It was a bizarre case of the week, even by Criminal Minds standards.

There was an unsub who liked to burn himself causing virtuous people to kill themselves so he could dump their bodies near sinkholes, which was all some kind of tribute to thank Hell for claiming his abusive parents.

Where, pray tell, does he think he's going to end up?

Couldn't he have just gotten a tanning bed and saved a lot of people a lot of aggravation?

Anyway, the case led Alvez to play a geological hunch and Rossi to, well, spitball.

Rossi: Maybe he was in some kind of accident.
Walker: What kind of accident?
Rossi: No idea. What? Alvez doesn't have a monopoly on grasping at straws.

At least Reid was remotely back with the BAU long enough to solve the case.

Of course, it's sinkholes as a metaphor for a portal to hell and a star cluster. How'd I miss that?

At least it was him figuring it out this time rather than having Garcia's computer spit out the answer. It was a welcome change of pace.

Bizarre Marking - Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 11

Since at least half of the episode was dedicated to Reid and Diana, the rest of the characters were fairly back-burnered except for Rossi, who always has words of wisdom for those around him.

Must be the liquor.

To catch Reid's handful of appearances this season, watch Criminal Minds online.
